It is birthday and anniversary celebrations galore as more than 2 500 classic, vintage, veteran, special-interest cars and trucks are expected to be on show at Cars in the Park at the Zwartkops Raceway on  August 4, where several marques will be celebrating special occasions.

Topping the list for supercar enthusiasts is the Mercedes-Benz 300SL, the original model launched in 1954 and later named the Sports Car of the Century in 1999. The original 300SL, known for being the fastest production car of its time, could reach speeds of up to 260 km/h with the right gear ratio. Its famous gullwing doors and status as the first production car with direct fuel injection made it a standout.

Also turning 60 this year is the Porsche 911, which debuted in Frankfurt in 1963 as the Porsche 901 before being renamed due to Peugeot's trademark on three-digit names with a zero in the middle. The 911's iconic design and rear-engine layout remain largely unchanged to this day.

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint, celebrating its 70th anniversary, was a marvel of its time with its twin-cam engine and elegant design by Franco Scaglione at Bertone. Equally memorable is the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT, introduced in 1964, featuring a 1600 cc engine and praised for its handling and speed.

Marking 50 years is the original BMW 5 Series, which cemented BMW's presence in South Africa when it was produced at the Rosslyn plant. Also from 1974 is the Cortina 2500 Big Six Pick Up, known for its impressive performance and popularity.

The Ford Sierra XR8, which turns 40, was a limited-edition model with a 5.0-litre V8 Mustang engine, created for racing homologation. The Unimog, celebrating 75 years, is renowned for its off-road capabilities and versatile uses, including military and emergency services.

Fiat and Chrysler also celebrate significant milestones, with Fiat turning 125 and Chrysler marking a century since the first car under its nameplate was sold.

One of the highlights of Cars in the Park 2024 will be the celebration of the Ford Mustang's 60th anniversary. First sold in April 1964, the Mustang has remained a popular and iconic car worldwide, including in South Africa.
